I told you yesterday that I would be spending my first advertising dollars. That's because, up til now, this site's traffic has all been free.

Here's why...

Since this is an SBI powered website, unlike other sites I've managed, I'm in control of my meta tags. This makes optimizing my pages for the search engines soooo much easier. That's how you start the traffic ball rolling.

Any new additions to this site are automatically submitted to the search engines by SBI. I don't stop there, though. I manually submitted the site myself using the links found on the submission page. This guarantees that the major search engines will crawl and index regularly. That's because, every time I add any content, the engines get pinged. Pinging is like sonar on a submarine. It tells the search engines there's something there that wasn't there before. Search engines love new content!

I take advantage of free classifieds. I have 5 social networking accounts and I'm planning on opening a couple more. Almost all of them offer some sort of free advertising to their members. I simply set aside one day per week for submitting ads. I also utilize some niche directories that offer free advertising. These can be found through keyword searches related to your particular business. I use SearchIt! for that. It's a free tool from SBI that returns results from all the search engines, not just one.

Every time I run across a good free directory, I list the site. This helps provide quality backlinks. Bingo, more free traffic! Be careful, though. Not all backlinks are good backlinks. There's a really good free mass submitter on the submission page. They only submit to directories with good Google page ranks and Alexa ratings. I haven't submitted to any of the paid directories yet, but I plan on using some of them. I also participate in a free link exchange service called Value Exchange. Anyone with a website can sign up. It sends you lists of websites based on keyword searches. You then visit each site to determine if it would compliment yours. If you like what you see, you exchange link codes. Again, more free traffic.

I use a signature ad in all of my email correspondence. It's easy to do and generates a fair amount of traffic all by itself.

Lastly, I participate in forum discussions. This is my favorite form of free traffic generation. I've gotten a lot of help myself and I like spreading the karma around!

It doesn't matter what kind of business you run, these techniques will get traffic to your site. It doesn't take a huge time investment, either. A couple of hours a day is really all you need.

Seems I'm guilty of not following my own advice.

Yesterday, after making some additions to the "Blog Advertising" page, I popped over to my "Google Webmaster Tools" account. I hadn't been there in a while and I wanted to check my crawl stats. (You'll find this ironic later!)

One of the tools there is a bar graph that indicates the percentage of web pages and blog posts that have been distributed to the net.

My distribution stats for HTML text, or webpages, showed near 100. That's a good thing. It means the entire site has been crawled, indexed, and distributed to the world wide web. I'm able to verify that using other tools at my disposal.

Here's the ironic part. The graph that shouws distribution of XML, or blog text, was barely registering anything at all! I laughed right out loud. If it were possible for a human to actually kick himself in the rear-end, I would have done so! Why? Because part of the additions I had just made to the site were links leading to free blog submission directories.

I spent the next few hours using those links myself. I submitted this blog to about 15 good quality free submission sites. I'm going back in today and set up accounts with the sites that require membership before they will accept a listing. I also plan to list with a few of the high quality paid submission sites.

It'll be the first money I've spent on any kind of advertising!

I had conversation about cookies with my sister this weekend. No, not the chocolate chip kind! I'm talking about the little snippets of code that some websites leave behind after you visit. Here's what my sister said. "I don't visit websites that put cookies on my computer". And I said, "Why on earth not?". Her answer surprised me and prompted this bloglet. She said, "I don't want anyone digging around in my computer for my personal information". Now, you have to understand, she is more computer literate than I am. She's had a computer longer. She is working on her Associates Degree at an online college. She really should know better! That got me thinking. There must be scads of people out there who think the same way. I really do get it. Caution is the word of the day. But cookies are like a benign tumor. No one wants one but it won't kill you! Without cookies, your online shopping experience could never be so streamlined. Think about your buying habits. Most of the time you go for roughly the same kinds of things. Cookies help the retailer put the products you like in front of you, faster. Without cookies, there'd never be any reason to become a marketing affiliate. Who's going to promote someone else's product if there's no way to earn a commission on it? Cookies gather information on your likes and dislikes. They also help companies research their demographic, enabling them to filter out annoying, unwanted, information. It's actually illegal for them to do any more than that. Believe it or not, no one really wants to send you information you're not interested in! They want to put offers in front of you that are related to your interests and needs. So, don't be paranoid about cookies. They are delicious (...in the kind of way that keeps your inbox free from hordes of unwanted email)!
