Website submission...
Done optimizing your site? Website submission is the next step. It lets the search engines find and crawl your pages.
| | Beware of Link Farms...
Also known as FFA's (free-for-all's), link farms are set up specifically to deceive the search engines about your link popularity. Most of them cycle out older links and replace them with newer ones. That means you have to keep going back to re-submit. Your time is better spent building permanent backlinks at quality sites. This will earn you better rankings in the end. |
Do some prep work before submitting your site...
You'll be asked for the same basic information at each submission site. It'll save time if you get it ready beforehand. Save the info in Microsoft notepad or any other plain text editor. Here's what you'll need...
- Email address-Some places won't let you submit unless your email address reflects your URL.

- URL-Your home page address or the address of a specific page you want to submit. Build and submit a sitemap. If you have an RSS feed, submit that address. Then, any time you add content or make changes, the search engines will know which pages to crawl first.
- Title-See the SEO page for help with this.
- Description-One or two lines of text that clearly explain your site or page.
| | Now you're ready to begin the website submission process...
Start with the major search engines. Getting indexed with them should be your first priority. Then you'll want a few backlinks with quality directories. Last, search out two or three niche directories to list with.
These addresses will get you started...
List your site in only one category per directory. Choose the category that best describes your site. Write down the directory URL and the category you submitted to. This will make it easier when you come back later to see if you've been added or not. |
Patience, patience, patience...
It'll take some time for your listing to show up. Especially at the human edited directories. This is normal. Don't get discouraged. If you've optimized your website properly, you'll be fine. Move on to other website promotion ideas like article writing, blogging, or link exchange.
Speaking of link exchange...
Website submission isn't the only way to build quality inbound links. If you find a website that seems compatable (but not competitive) with yours, see if they're interested in exchanging links. Usually you'll see something like Link With Us near the bottom of their home page. If you don't, send them an email. Explain politely what you're interested in doing. Include your URL. Who knows, you could end up with a valuable resource for your effort!
